    • No, he tried to. I was with 2 other teachers at the north end of the Forbidden City and we wanted to return to our hotel. The ride should be 24 yuan. He wouldn’t move unless we agreed to pay him 80 and not use the meter. We argued for a bit trying to get him to just use the meter, but he wouldn’t budge. A lot of cabbies were doing the same thing to tourists, foreign and Chinese.

We wound up walking to another street on this hot day, when one in our party had an arm in a cast. Several drivers tried this. In the end we went to a big hotel and they got us a cab.

      • I guess there are quite few dishonest Chinese taxi drivers. One of the times that I went from Di Ku Lu to the Jinan Highspeed Railway Station, the driver picked up another passenger on the way, then dropped him off (which might have been a slight detour for me) & then charged me the full fare on the meter besides what that extra passenger paid him. I tried to pay less but since I couldn’t argue in Chinese and had a train to catch I ended up paying the full amount on the meter.
