Ruined for Life: Phoenix Edition

This week I thought I wouldn’t get a Weekly Photo Challenge done. I had to help my parents with an Independence Day party they throw of 85, count ‘em 85 guests. And I just didn’t have a good idea.

When I think of fleeting, my first thought is sakara, i.e. cherry blossoms. I looked all over for some of my old pictures of cherry blossoms, but couldn’t find any. So I go one from Flickr, which is of the province I lived in, Nara.

Poets write of sakara’s ability to evoke time’s passing and the fleeting nature of all earthly things.

A haiku by Bashoo:

blooming wildly

among the peach trees:

first cherry blossoms

sakimidasu / momo no naka yori / hatsuzakura

Loveliest of Trees, the CherryLoveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.
