What a Waste

I am (once again) considering a career change. Maybe I’m still considering a career change is a better way to put it. I do have an interest in technology and wonder which branch of that field would work best for me.

So to figure that out I made and appointment at the local community college‘s advising center. When I made the appointment I specifically told the receptionist what I was looking for and I got an appointment for this afternoon. Great.

I drove the 25 minutes over there and signed in and waited. After a few minutes, a counselor met with me. Within 3 minutes she told me I needed to speak with a career counselor, not an academic advisor. Okay. They don’t take walk-ins and she took me to the office adjacent to the counseling center to make an appointment.

I learned that if you’re not currently enrolled there’s a $45 charge for an appointment, but the first session, they waive the fee. So I made an appointment for tomorrow night. I really don’t have loads of extra time now and I probably should have started this process earlier. Yet now as I consider the situation it seems like the usual plan is a series of appointments, which I can’t do. Also, I just have never gotten good information or direction from career counselors. It could be a good field, but usually it’s just a parasitic one that offers bland exercises and useless advice. I mean the last time I went to a career counselor, she advised me to go to law school when the field was drying up. Besides I’m likely to have to do the process myself. I don’t need someone to tell me to go speak to people in the field or to do my own research. I should either just research myself and save a couple hours time. I could be wrong, but I think the odds are in my favor.
